Eco-socialist reading group 1- blockade tactics
Although the climate protests might have subsided since their peak in 2019, fossil fuel emissions have not- in fact they’ve steadily been increasing and are projected to do so for the foreseeable future. With the world continuing to hurtle towards catastrophic amounts of global warming, the capitalist elite pocket enormous profits which mean they can keep putting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere while sheltering themselves from the worst effects while the poor and the most vulnerable among them are left at the mercy of an increasingly ferocious and unpredictable climate alongside the other species and physical systems which also inhabit this planet.
This reading group is about understanding the mechanisms of capitalism which underlie this grave situation, and looking at society and struggle in its present form to understand what political interventions might be successful in urgently reducing emissions while building a revolution.
In session 1, we’re going to be talking about blockade tactics in Australia- what they are, why they’re important, whether they’re effective, and how they fit in to our understanding of revolutionary climate struggle.
Session 2 will be a focus on workerist climate politics- what workers movements have had radical positions on climate change and what the potential for a radical climate workers’ movement is.
These will be followed by a series of sessions working our way through Andreas Malm’s book ‘Fossil Capital’ in addition to some other readings through which we will hopefully be able to get a better grasp on the political economy of climate change in the world and in Australia, and how we can effectively intervene while building towards revolution.
